Mylohyoid

Anatomy

Origin:
Mylohyoid line on the mandible.

Insertion:
Body of the hyoid bone and fibres from the muscle on the opposite side.

Key Relations:
-Is one of the suprahyoid muscles lying in the anterior triangle of the neck.
-Forms the floor of the oral cavity with its partner from the opposite side.
-Is immediately superior to anterior belly of digastric.
-Superior to mylohyoid is another suprahyoid muscle geniohyoid.

Functions

-Elevates the floor of the oral cavity e.g. first stages of swallowing, the hyoid bone and the tongue.
-Depresses the mandible.

Supply

Nerve Supply:
Mylohyoid nerve from the mandibular division (V3) of the trigeminal nerve (CN 5).

Blood Supply:
Mylohyoid branch of inferior alveolar artery.

Clinical

As the mylohyoid forms the floor of the oral cavity, it is a surgical landmark for tongue resections.
