Brachioradialis

Anatomy

Origin:
Proximal part of the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus and adjacent intermuscular septum.

Insertion:
Lateral surface of the distal end of the radius.

Key Relations:
-One of the four muscles of the superficial posterior compartment of the forearm.
-Lies anterior to the elbow joint.
-Forms the lateral boundary of the cubital fossa.

Functions

-Flexor of the elbow joint when the forearm is mid-pronated.

-When the forearm is pronated, brachioradialis supinates the forearm during flexion and when the forearm is supinated, brachioradialis pronates the forearm during flexion
e.g. turning a corkscrew.

-Stabilizes the elbow joint during rapid flexion and extension
e.g. hammering..

Supply

Nerve Supply:
Radial nerve (C5, C6).

Blood Supply:
Radial recurrent artery.
