Functions
Creates a significant portion (50-70%) of seminal fluid, though not all is released in the primary ejaculation (which consists mainly of prostatic fluid).
The seminal vesicle empties into the vas deferens. (Note that the seminal vesicle forms in utero from a pouch of the vas deferens.).
Anatomy
Pair of tubular glands attached close to prostate, located in the lower pelvis inferior and posterior to the bladder, lateral to the vas deferens. ~5cm when folded, 10cm when unfolded.
The vas deferens and excretory duct of the seminal vesicle combine, and immediately flow through the prostate to the urethra.
Clinical
Low seminal pH (<7.2) can be caused by ejaculatory duct obstruction. This is a serious issue, as alkaline ejaculate is necessary to protect against the acidic vaginal environment.
Inflammation (Seminal vesiculitis) can occur with bacterial infection. It presents clinically with vague back pain, penile or scrotal pain, and/or painful ejaculations. Treatment with antibiotics normally resolves, though intractable cases are possible.
